This herb is the root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (family Labiatae), produced mainly in the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia, collected in spring or autumn, dried in sunlight, sliced, and used unprepared or stir-baked with wine or stir-baked to charcoal.
Properties:
bitter in flavour, cold in property, acting on the lung, gallbladder, stomach and large intestine channels.
Effects:
clearing away heat and dampness, purging fire, detoxicating, stopping bleeding, and preventing miscarriage.
Indications:
1. Various damp-heat syndromes. For the treatment of damp-warm syndrome with fever, feeling of fullness in the chest, and greasy tongue coating, it is often used with talc and rice-paper pith, as in Decoction of Scutellaria and Talc (Huang qin Huashi Tang); for damp-heat syndrome with jaundice, it is often used with capejasmirie fruit; arid oriental wormwood; for the treatment of damp-heat in the lower-jiao marked by difficult and painful micturition, it is often used with rehmannia root and akebia stem, as in Pill for Removing Excessive Heat from the Heart (Huofu Dan); for suppurative infections on the body surface, it is often used with trichosanthes root, dahurian angelica and so on. 2. Acute febrile diseases with such symptoms and signs as high fever, restlessness, yellow tongue coating, and rapid pulse. It is often used together with coptis rhizome and cape-jasmine, fruit, as in Antidotal Decoction of Coptis (Huanglian Jiedu Tang). In cases of alternate attacks of fever and chills, it is usually used with bupleurum root, as in Minor Decoction of Bupleurum (Xiao Chaihu Tang). 3. Cough with yellow sputum due to heat in the lung. It is often used with mulberry bark and ophiopogon root, as in Decoction for Clearing Away Heat in the Lung (Qing Fei Tang). 4. Bleeding due to the invasion of blood by excessive heat, such as hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria or hemafecia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Carbonized scutellaria root can be used alone or together with dried rehmannia root and cogongrass rhizome. 5. Heat-syndrome during pregnancy and threatened abotdon. It is often used with Chinese angelica root and white atractylodes, as in Chinese Angelica Powder (Danggui San).
Dosage and Administration:
3-10g, decocted in water for an oral dose or prepared into the forms of bolus and powder. For clearing away heat, it should be used unprepared; for preventing abortion, usually stir-baked; for hemostasis, stir-baked to charcoal.
