Source: This herb is the ripe seed of Plantago asiatica L., or Plantago depressa Wilid. (family Plantaginaceae). The former is produced in all parts of China and the latter mainly in Heilongjiang and Liaoning provinces. The seeds are collected in summer and autumn, dried in sunlight, and used unprepared or stir-baked with salt water.

Properties: sweet in flavour, cold in property, acting on the, kidney, liver and lung channels.

Effects: inducing diuresis to treat stranguria, excreting dampness to arrest diarrhea, clearing heat from the liver to improve the acuity of vision, clearing away heat in the lung to resolve phlegm.

Indications: 1. Edema ,dysuria or dribbling and painful micturition. It is often used with manshurian aristolochia stem and talc, as in Eight Health Restoring Powder (Bazheng San). 2. Diarrhea due to summer-heat and dampness. Plan. tain seed can arrest diarrhea by inducing diuresis and is very effective in treating watery diarrhea due to excessive dampness in the body during summer, months. It is often used together with elscholtzia and poria, as in Plantain Seed Powder (Cheqianzi San). 3. Blood-shot eyes, cataract, nebula, blurred vision, etc. To treat blood-shot, swollen and painful eyes due to excessive heat in the liver, it is often used with chrysanthemum flower and gentiana; to treat chronic cataract with deficiency of the liver-yin and kidney-yin, it is often used with dried rehmannia root, ophiopogon root and wolfberry fruit. 4. For the treatment of cough with profuse sputum due to the heat in the lung, it can be used with platycodon root and bitter apricot kernel.

Dosage and Administration: 5-10g, wrapped in gauze and decocted in water for an oral dose. For inducing diuresis and arresting diarrhea, the herb should be stir-baked, but for resolving phlegm, it should be used unprepared.
