This herb is the shell of Ostrea gigas Thunb., or Ostrea talienwhanensis Crosse, or Ostrea rivularis Gould (family Ostreidae) which is produced in coastal areas. When the flesh is taken off, the shell is washed clean, dried in sunlight and used unprepared or calcined.
Properties:
salty in flavour, slightly cold in property, acting bn the liver and kidney channels.
Effects:
calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity of the liver-yang, softening and dissolving hard masses and inducing astringency.
Indications:
1. Irritability, palpitation, insomnia and dizziness caused by hyperactivity of yang due to deficiency of yin. It is often used together with dragon¡¯s bone, achyranthes root, white peony root and, red ochre, as in Tranquilizing Liver-wind Decoction (Zhengan Xifeng Tang); in cases of stirring of endopathic wind of deficiency type with convulsions of the extremities due to impairment of yin by febrile diseases, it is often used with tortoise plastron, turtle shell, dried rehmannia. root and donkey-hide gelatin, as in Pulse Restoring Decoction of Three Shell Herbs (Sanjia Fumai Tang). 2. Scrofula and subcutaneous nodules due to accumulation of phlegm-fire. It is often used with thunberg fritillary bulb and scrophularia root viz. Scrofula-eliminating Pill (Xiaoluo Wan); it is also often used with red sage root, turtle shell and bugleweed in the treatment of hypochondriac masses(hepatolienomegaly). 3. Sweatihg due to debility, seminal emission, leukorrhagia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. For the treatment of spontaneous sweating and night sweat, it is often used with astragalus root, light wheat and ephedra root viz. Oyster Shell Powder (Muli San); for seminal emission due to deficiency of the kidney, it is often used together with flatstcm milkvetch seed, gordon euryale seed and lotus stamen, as in Golden Lock Pill for Keeping the Kidney Essence (Jinsuo Gujing Wan); to treat leukorrhagia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, it can be used with dcagon¡¯s bone, cuttle-bone and Chinese yam. Besides, this herb has the action of neutralizing acidity so it can be used to relieve hyperhydrochloria.
Dosage and Administration:
15¡ª30g, crushed before using and decocted earlier than other herbs. For calming the liver and suppressing hyperactivity of the liver-yang, and softening and resolving hard masses, it should be used unprepared; for inducing astringency and neutralizing aci
