This herb is the root of Panax notoginseng (Burk.) Chen (family Araliaceae) which is chiefly produced in Tunnan and Guangxi provinces. It is dug in autumn, washed clean after the removal of lateral roots, rootlets and root crown, dried in sunlight and ground into powder for use.
Properties:
sweet and slightly bitter in flavour, warm in property, acting on the liver and stomach channels.
Effects:
arresting bleeding by resolving blood stasis and promoting blood circulation to relieve pain.
Indications:
1. Various kinds of internal and external bleeding, especially bleeding accompanied with blood stasis. It can be used alcne by swallowing its powder, or used with ophicalcite, and carbonized hair. 2. Traumatic injuries with blood stasis, swellig and pain. It can be used either orally or externally, alone or with frankincense, myrrh and ground beetle. Besides, notoginseng has been used in the treatment of angina pectoris of coronary heart disease in recent years with curative effects.
Dosage and Administration:
1-3g ground into powder for swallowing; proper amount for external use.
