This herb consists of the root nd rhizome of Gentiana manshurica Kitag, or Gentiana scabra Bge, or Gentiana triflora Pall, or Gentiana rigescens Franch. (family Gentianaceae), grown in every part of the northern and southern China. The herb is collected in autumn, dried in sunlight, cut into pieces and used unprepared.
Properties:
bitter in flavour, cold in property, acting on the liver and gallbladder channels
Effects:
clearing away heat, removing dampness and purging fire in the liver and gallbladder.
Indications:
1. Jaundice due to damp-heat. It is usually used with oriental wormwood and capejasmine fruit. For the downward flow of damp-heat manifested as scrotal swelling, perineal pruritus and yellow thick leukorrhagia, it is often used with plantain seed and flavescent sophora It is usually used with coptis, uncaria stern with hooks and so on as in Pill for Removing Heat from fthe Liver and Relieving Convulsion (Liangjing Wan). root. 2. Fire of excess type in the liver and gallbladder manifested as headache, fullness in the head, blood-shot, swollen and painful eyes, pain in the hypochondriac region, bitter taste in the mouth, and deafness. It is often used with scutellaria root, capejasmine fruit, and bupleurum root, as in Decoc tion of Gentiana for Purging Liver-fire (Longdan Xiegan Tang). 3. Wind syndrome induced by excessive heat in the liver marked by persistent high fever, spasm and convulsion,
Dosage and Administration:
decocted in water for an oral dose or used in bolus and powder.
Modern Researches:| The dosage should not be too big and the drug should be avoided in cases of cold syndrome of deficiency type of the spleen and stomach. | | Gentiopicrin can improve the activity of the macrophages in the hemoleukocyte, and have the funciton of anti-inflammation cleaning the advanced menstruation, discharge and menostaxis.
