This herb is the root of the perennial deciduous shrub, Sophora flavescens Ait. (Family Leguminosae), Produced every where in China , collected in spring and autumn, dried in the sunlight after removing the rootlets, sliced and used raw.
Properties:
Bitter in flavor cold in nature, it acts on the heart, liver , large intestine and bladder channels. The cold property is capable of clearing heat, the bitter flavor removing the dampness and purging fire downward. For this reason, the herb is good at clearing the pathogenic heat in the lower-jiao, hence indicated for the syndromes of stranguria. leukorrhagia , pruritus vulvae ,etc. In addition, the herb can also expell wind , destroy intestinal parasites , and relieve itching. Therefore, it is often used to cure itching of urticaria and eczema.
Effects:
Clearing heat and dampness, destroying intestinal parasites, relieving itching and inducing diuresis.
Indications:
1.For treating dysentery caused by damp-heat, it is used in combination with aucklandia root and liquorice. For treating hemorrhoid with bleeding, it is used in combination with the herbs for stopping bleeding by removing heat from the blood, such as dried rehmannia root and sophora fruit. In case of jaundice due to damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, it is used with oriental wormwood and capejasmine fruit to normalize the function of the gallbladder and clear jaundice. 2.For treating stranguria, profuse leukorrhea, vaginal itching and eczema caused by the downward flow of damp-heat, it is used in combination with the herbs for clearing heat, and dampness and relieving itching, such as dittany bark, phellodendron bark ,etc. In addition, in ancient clinical practice the herb was used to cure scabies and leprosy.
Dosage and Administration:
3-l0g, proper dosage (quantum satis) when applied externally.
Modern Researches:| The herb is incompatible with hellebore root and contraindicated in cases of insufficiency of the spleen and stomach. | Matrine can help bronchia asthma and chronic bronchitis.
D-Matrine can inhibit histamine, acetylcholine, and barium chloride. It has excitatory effects of smooth muscle. Its methods of relieving asthma are increasing the ratio of CAMP/CGMP in smooth muscle cells, keeping the level of exogenous Ca2+ ions low, reducing the smooth muscle contractile protein, and relaxing smooth muscle. Additionally, it has the function of inhibiting acetylcholine, exciting M receptor. Thereby, Flavescent has huge advantage in asthma therapy.
Flavescent can inhibit enzymes including phosphatases and phosphodiesterase. It also can adjust physiological function of smooth muscle, and can inhibit COX and LOX. It has the function of anti-inflammation to the bronchi accordingly. |
