This herb is the rhizome of Zingiber officinale (Willd.) Rosc. (family. Zingiberaceae), which is produced mainly in Sic/wan, Hubei Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. It is harvested in winter, washed clean, dried in sunlight or baked dry with mild heat, and sliced for use.
Properties:
pungent in flavour, hot in property, acting on the stomach, heart and lung channels.
Effects:
warming the middle-jiao, dispelling cold, warming the lung and resolving phlegm retention.
Indications:
1. Cold syndrome of deficiency -type of the spleen and stomach characterized by gastric and abdominal cold pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, etc. It is often used with ginseng, white atractylodes rhizome and liquorice, as in Pill for Regulating the Function of Middle-jiao (Lizhong Wan). For vomiting and diarrhea due to the direct attack of pathogenic cold on - the stomach, it is used alone, by mixing its powder with warm water for an oral dose, or used together with pinellia, as in Powder of Pinellia and Dried Ginger (Banxia Ganjiang San). 2. Retention of cold phlegm in the lung manifested as cough, dyspnea, cold appearance, chilly sensation in the back, and profuse thin clear sputum. It is often used with ephedra, asarum and schisandra fruit, as in Minor Decoction of Green Dragon (Xiao Qinglong Tang). In addition, when this herb is used together with prepared the lateral root of aconite, it can reinforce aconite's effects of recuperating depleted yang to rescue patient from collapse, and can reduce the toxicity of aconite. If dried ginger is stir-baked to slightly black on the surface but brownish yellow inside, it is called baked ginger, which is less effective for warming the interior but more effective for warming the channels and stopping bleeding than dried ginger. Baked ginger is indicated for bleeding due to cold of insufficiency type, such as hematemesis, hemafecia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, accompanied with cold hands and feet, pale tongue, and thready and faint pulse. - This herb is also used in the treatment of abdominal pain and diarrhea due to cold of deficiency type in the stomach and spleen.
Dosage and Administration:
3-10g, decocted in waterfix an oral dose.
