Nature's Health
Choles-Balance
contains red yeast rice, an exclusive source of standardized
Monascus purpureus
yeast (or Red Yeast) fermented on premium rice, which naturally
contains HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (>0.5%) and major unsaturated
fatty acids (0.8-2%) which are extremely effective in reducing
elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
This product can be used to suppress atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia
and to prevent the occurrence of heart disease, diabetes,
high blood pressure and obesity. A clinical trial was inducted
by several hospitals affiliated with the Chinese FDA (The
Bureau of Drug Administration, Ministry of Public Health of
China) in the early 1990. A total of 446 patients with hyperlipidemia
were randomly assigned to two groups in the trial (see table
below, ref. 1).

Our lab conducted
an acute toxicity study of Red Yeast on mice. It showed that
the maximum tolerant dose in mice is greater than 13g/kg,
which is almost 150 times the daily dosage. A long term toxicity
study on rats demonstrated no significant difference in behavior,
dieting, feces, urine, color of hair, or weight after 2 months
and 4 months of forced feeding of Red Yeast (ref. 2).
